Jen and Nick are Married – A Benmiller/Goderich Wedding

This summer we enjoyed the wedding of Jen and Nick in a quiet outdoor ceremony on the grounds of the Benmiller Inn overlooking the Maitland River near Goderich.  We were excited at the opportunity to shoot a wedding there as the Goderich region has always been special to our family.  As we discussed their wedding plans they were surprised that photographers from Chatham would be so familiar with their home town (seriously, they live right behind one of our favourite landmarks – Culbert’s Bakery).

It was a day that was a long time in coming, in fact it was a bit overdue as their original wedding day had been postponed, or rather sidelined, by the arrival of, and the subsequent cleanup of, the 2011 Goderich tornado.  With the help and support of friends and family, the pieces were picked up, their house was rebuilt, and their wedding plans were put back on track.

Jen and Nick, thank you for allowing us to tell your story.  Your relationship has faced hardships most (hopefully) will never see and you’ve come out the other side stronger.  We wish you a lifetime of love, happiness, and calm winds.

Jamie and Alexandria are Married – Wyoming Wedding Photographer

This summer we were honoured to be present as Jamie married Alexandria, the girl who stole his heart, in a quiet yet fun filled Wyoming wedding ceremony followed by a laugh filled evening.  We were welcomed by both families and laughed with them, literally from morning till night.  Jamie’s humour just bubbles out of him and it’s obviously the source of the smile on Alexandria’s face and the sparkle in her eyes as she laughed with him.  Their first dance was, without a doubt, the most funny, tender, raucous, loving, off the wall one we’ve ever shot. It fit.

Thank you Jamie and Alexandria for inviting us along and we wish you a lifetime of love and laughter together.

Thirty Years

Wedding_1_0001

It was on this day thirty years ago, June 16, 1984.  Of course it was a Saturday, the sun was shining, the day was beautiful, and I was a nervous twenty year old.  It was on this day thirty years ago that I married a little girl from Poland and irrevocably changed my life.  I had no choice.  I was in love.

Thirty years!  Some days it seems like a heart beat and other days a life time.  We began our life together with little more than a desire to build a life as one, to face whatever came at us as a team, and to do that with the one person we couldn’t live without.  There were no certainties.  We had a tiny two bedroom apartment, a rusting and primered Honda, and no education – that would come later as we put each other through school.  Now after thirty years we have so much.  We have two beautiful daughters who are kind, smart and caring and now building their own lives.  We have happy memories and adventures tucked away that we can bring out and share around a campfire or that accompany us on walks or in quiet moments with our heads together.  We have the wisdom that comes from learning things the hard way, and the satisfaction that comes from the same source.  We have a hand to hold – walking, driving, sitting around talking, or just a quiet moment – there is always a hand to hold.  A hand to help us up, to steady our pace, to lead the other forward, or to pull them back from danger.

Over the course of the past thirty years we have loved, argued, dreamed, schemed, built, and challenged.  We have held hands and laughed together in the joyful adventure life’s thrown at us and carried each other through loss and sorrow.  We’ve supported each other, nurtured the other’s creativity and quest for more, faced uncertainty and met parenting head on.  We’ve seen many dreams go unrealized and some plans fail, but we’ve always known that good or bad, we were by each other’s side while picking up the pieces and planning our next step.

As I look at Ewa now I realize that she is no longer the little girl that I loved and married.  She is the woman that I love and have built a life with.  Not two lives shared but one.  We often say our spouse is our better half but there is little to delineate us as our lives have grown together, intertwined like roots.

Our lives are filled with choices every day, but in my life with Ewa I have had no choice.  I had no choice in loving her, it’s what my heart wants.  I had no choice in building a life with her, it’s made us who we are.  And now I look forward to celebrating the next thirty year milestone with her, and who knows, we’ll shoot for the one after that.

Happy Anniversary Ewa.  You’ve made my life everything that it is today and you continue to shape it with each new dawn.  You are the flavour and spice in my every moment, and my support and security even when I don’t realize I need it.  You are everything that makes a home worth coming home to and forever a part of me.

I love you!

I have no choice!

Moustachioed

Chatham-Kent_Photographer_Lens_On_Life_Moustache_010

Well I finally got a chance to catch up on some long overdue personal work.  The Moustachioed series!  And while it may look like a shoot that would be done in conjunction with Movember, rest assured it wasn’t.  Our son in law Colin announced plans last summer to grow a moustache.  A handlebar moustache.  An epic handlebar moustache!

At first we weren’t sure what to think of it and there was the odd comment of “Colin, leave it alone or it won’t grow” and “you’re getting a little preoccupied with that lip hair, aren’t you?”,  but before long though, we were converts and grew to like his little summer project. Unfortunately the novelty eventually wore off with him.  There is, after all a good deal of maintenance involved in the grooming of a truly epic ‘stache. With all the combing, waxing, gluing (yes glue), and the food removal he eventually grew tired of it and announced plans to shave it off (actually I think Jenn launched that campaign).  He was given a cease and desist order until a photo shoot could be arranged (yes father-in-laws have that kind of power).

On the night of the shoot they arrived as planned and he announced that he had brought clothes and was going to change for the shoot.  Change?  I hadn’t planned on this!  When he emerged for the shoot the moustache was freshly groomed and he was fitted out in a white button down and vest.  Very classic look.  But the kicker was, he had brought along …. a bowler hat!

Now, if you’re like me you might ask “why do you own a bowler hat?”  The answer was simple, “I’ve had it since I was in high school and wanted to get into hat juggling”.  I hadn’t thought of that.

I’m not really sure when it happened but at one point the shoot went a little off the rails.

Chatham-Kent_Photographer_Lens_On_Life_Moustache_013

Chatham-Kent_Photographer_Lens_On_Life_Moustache_014

Eventually we dialed it down a bit and went with one main light fired through some home made cutters with another gridded flash to the left providing a little separation.

And here’s a look into the LOL studios.  We call this room the northeast studio – we have several more.  For this shoot, our dining room table has been pushed to the windows, the backdrop is draped in front of the china cabinet, and for much of it I was shooting on a ladder from our sunken living room.  You can see one gridded light set on the table to camera right and the camera left light is hidden behind the fan and in front of the, uh, studio refrigerator.

Many thanks to Colin for being such a good model (as in model son-in-law) and putting up with our test shoots and projects, he’s always there to help.  Our daughter brought home a good boy.

Chrissy and Chad are Married – A London Area Wedding

Last weekend we were invited to photograph the wedding of Chrissy Lauze and Chad Lum at the Purple Hill Auction House in Thorndale, northeast of London.   It was cold.  Oh it was cold, but the wedding party were troopers and braved the frigid weather for some outdoor shots. Chrissy had a beautiful wedding dress – in fact, she had three.  In a nod to Chinese wedding tradition, Chrissy disappeared twice only to reappear in a different dress, including a stunning red dress made for her in China.  After the ceremony there was a team of horses offering wagon rides, a visit from Santa himself, and great toasts from friends and family.  The evening was rounded out with a fun and passionate bride’s dance followed by a touching father of the bride dance.  He sang to her as they danced to his recording of You’re Gonna Miss This.  He sang with joy and gusto.  She cried.  The end.

Chrissy and Chad, thank you for inviting us to share your day with you and we wish you the best of luck and love in your life together.

Lacey and John are Engaged – Sarnia Wedding Photographer

We first met Lacey and John back in June of this year when they both stood up in the wedding of Heather and Eric.  On her wedding day, Heather said that Lacey and John were next and she was right.

We joined them out at Zekveld’s Garden Market in Reece’s Corners for a quick tour of the orchard and some fantastic shots.  Lacey has hands-down one the title of most prepared bride-to-be in an engagement shoot.  She chose an orchard for the location because apple picking is a favourite fall activity and she scrounged, made, and bought meaningful props and signs to add a little spice to the shoot.  A few outfit changes and we had the makings of a great photo shoot in the country.

Thanks Lacey and John for letting us get to know you and share a piece of the history you are building together.  We had a great time and we’re looking forward to your fall wedding in September.

Katie & Adam Are Married – Chatham-Kent Wedding Photographer

On September 7th we had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Katie McFadden and Adam Holmes at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham.   Katie looked exquisite in her Mikaella dress and Vera Wang shoes, but what most guests didn’t see was an antique broach, a family treasure, pinned under the skirt – her something old. Adam, on the other hand, didn’t hide his something old – it’s hard to hide a fire engine red ’69 Camaro like the one he posed with.  His dad’s project car, the finishing touches on it had been completed just in time for the big day.

The decor and style of the venue was kept a secret, even from the wedding party, as Katie wanted to surprise everyone, and surprise them she did.  From the flowers, to the draping, to the dance floor, the design was breathtaking.

Thank you Katie and Adam for sharing your day with us.  Both families were warm and welcoming and made us feel at home.  We wish you a lifetime of love and happiness together.

Monica & Adam’s Distillery District E-Session

Last weekend we had the pleasure of shooting an engagement session with Monica and Adam in Toronto’s historic Distillery District.  When we’re planning an outdoor shoot we always recommend choosing a date then keeping the next day open in case we have to reschedule due to rain.  In this case it was the other way around.  Monica texted us the day before and asked if we could do the shoot then as the forecast was calling for rainy weather to settle into Toronto over the next few days.  As it turned out our gear was already packed and so were we because we had planned on making a weekend of it as part of Eve’s birthday.

The Distillery District is such a fabulous place to shoot, full of old world charm, the textures of brick and cobblestone, alleyways and corners for romantic shots, and a little bit of history everywhere you look.  With restaurants and pubs, their flower festooned patios teeming with with friends meeting for dinner or drinks, it makes a great backdrop to begin telling a love story.  Of course having such a great looking couple that were so easy to work with helps too.  Monica and Adam may be from small town Ontario but they call Toronto home now, a place where they both work and play together.

In the end we were treated to great light, a fun evening chatting with new friends, and a chance to explore some of Toronto’s history.  Thanks Monica and Adam for inviting us along and we can hardly wait for your wedding next fall.  Enjoy the pictures!

Devon & Johnny Are Married – Windsor Essex Wedding Photographer

We were recently treated to the wedding of Devon and Johnny.  And I do mean treated. We were treated to a day full of love, family, exuberant celebration, dancing and best wishes.  Everyone likes to party at a wedding, eat, drink, and wish the couple well for their future, but it seemed that everyone at the wedding was making it their personal task to ensure a good time.

We’ve experienced a variety of cultures and traditions, both ethnic and family based, but this was our first Lebanese wedding as that’s where Johnny’s family is from.  We hope it’s our first of many.  Never before have we seen the dance floor that packed, and not just for a song or two, but the whole evening.  That’s a party.  And the drum!  It drives its beat down into your soul and right to your feet!  You can’t help but dance (and honestly, I can’t dance).

Both families welcomed us into their homes and their celebration not as another wedding day vendor, but as friends (as we left at the end of the evening Johnny’s dad actually gave us heck for not taking a plate of sweets with us!!)  Thank you for sharing your day and allowing us to tell your wedding story.

Katie & Adam Are Getting Married – Chatham-Kent Engagement Photography

We met with Katie and Adam to shoot their e-session on a beautiful summer day.  We started it simply at a location that is special to them – Katie’s parents’ house.  The dock to be exact.  When we set the date for the shoot we had to juggle schedules, weather, and the fact that her dad was rushing to prep his dock for the season, something of a matter of pride for all of them.  Adam told me he had helped Katie’s dad build it and they all like to spend time, pass time, or maybe waste time, sitting on it watching the river go by.

Katie and Adam are the classic high school sweethearts couple.  In fact, when asked about their first date, they said that it was probably when Katie asked Adam to prom.  Probably, because you see they were friends prior to that but it was agreed, prom was the first real date.   Friends that have grown and shaped a loving relationship together are the best foundation for building a marriage.

We’re looking forward to witnessing the next step in their life together when they marry next week at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre.  Best of luck Katie and Adam, and thank you for choosing us to witness and record your big day!
